My results were that I consume 913 cubic meters of water per year. It would appear that my largest contributor to the amount of water actually comes from the amount of food that I consume, in particular the meat portion of my diet. It was an interesting test to take as I would have assumed that the largest contributing factor would have been from an action such as showering/brushing teeth or doing the dishes, but it would seem that the steps I have taken to ensure that my water consumption stays low is working better than I thought. We have an infant in our house now so that has definitely changed our water usage habits, and not for the better I know for sure! I will try to ensure that I am doing full loads of laundry when the baby gets messy, and not just run a cycle with a few articles of clothing in the machine. I know one of the main reasons our water consumption has risen in the last while is because the hot summer days. When they finally came around we would fill up the kiddie pool so that the baby could play in the nice cool water and could dip our feet in to cool off too. I knew after two or three days that it was a waste of water and would soon become a strain on our wallet as well. So we consulted our city’s recreation guide and found that the city’s public pools offer free swim times on various times throughout the city. This was the perfect solution as the pool is already full and being used by multiple people in order to conserve… if everyone who wen to the municipal pool filled their own kiddie pool at home everyday that would be a ridiculous amount of water wasted. I think the one most important action I will take away from this activity it that I will invest in a rain barrel so I can re-use the rain water to water plants, wash the patio/outdoor furniture etc… it’s a fairly small investment and it will save water and money for years to come.
Where does my water use come from?
