Ingredients on packaged foods

The first item I chose was the Fibre 1 Chewy bar, a new favorite in our house. What surprised me was the amount of sugar in each bar. Sugar in different forms were mentioned 9 times on the ingredient list. Although they don’t claim to be low in sugar, it did surprise me. In total, there were 41 ingredients listed on the side of one bar. May rethink this one in the future. I know the rule of thumb is 5 or less.

The second one I looked at was Healthy Choice spaghetti sauce. The product claims on the front no fat and no added oil. I was impressed at the ingredient list. Most were vegetables and the product was true to the claim of no added oil. No fat on the other hand is another story. To me when sugar is added in products it is not “no fat” as they claim. Our body stores the sugar that it cannot process as fat.

The last one was Lipton Chicken noodle soup packets. I expected the sodium to be high so that was not surprising. What was surprising is that there is very little nutritional value in it at all. Zero fibre, vitamin A or C, and no calcium. Another ingredient I didnt’ realize it had was yeast. My son has a yeast allergy and I will not be serving this to him anymore.

Great challenge! Yikes! How much stuff are we putting in our bodies each and every day!
