The National Kidney Foundation gives the following tips on how to reduce sodium consumption from your diet:
1. Choose fresh fruit and vegetables as they are lower in sodium.
2. Use fresh rather than packaged meats. Although they contain natural sodium, it is much less than if the prepackaged stuff.
3. Select spices that do not include sodium in their labels
4. When buying frozen vegetables, choose those that are labeled “Fresh Frozen” and do not contain sodium
5. Beware of foods that do not taste overly salty, such as cottage cheese, but still contain a high level of sodium
