Gulping your breakfast as you rush to drop the kids off at school, eating in front of the TV, cleaning your plate before everyone else at the table… Sound familiar? You are not alone. Many people tend to eat too fast.
You might wonder why it is important to eat more slowly. For one, it helps you to realize that you are no longer hungry! Did you know that it takes approximately 20 minutes for your brain and stomach to register you’re full? If you devour your meal in 10 minutes, you don’t give yourself time to feel full and you might eat beyond your needs. A Japanese study published in the British Medical Journal concluded that eating too fast doubles the risks of obesity.
Obviously, starting to eat more slowly isn’t an easy feat; it’s probably a well-established habit that you have had since childhood. A good start could be to eat at the table without any other distractions. Not only will it give you precious moments with your loved ones, you can concentrate more on the speed in which you’re eating. You can even try to put down your fork between each bite!
