There are a few modifiable risk factors: hypertension, tobacco use and physical inactivity. Type2 diabetes a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. Having diabetes makes you twice as likely as someone who does not to develop cardiovascular disease.
The three main factors that cannot be modified are family history, ethnicity and age. Simply getting old also is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease; risk of stroke doubles every decade after age 55.
