I do not have many rules in my home. The one rule that I make sure is followed is “no shoes allowed inside the house.” Not only are contaminents spread through the soles of the bottom of our shoes, but dirt and grime as well. I take very good care of my hardwood floors and do not want extra dirt or scratches on them. I know that in some cultures it is considered rude to have people remove their shoes, as I have had foreign students live with me as a host family, but I explain why and they have no problem after that.
