In High School, I had the same gym teacher for all four years. She was funny, and friendly and just the right amount of strict. She never cared whether students were skilled at the various activities but instead focused on trying your best and having a positive attitude. Students were only “punished” if they were late, ill-prepared, or acted negatively towards the activity or one another. Your punishment was additional push-ups or laps. Later on, I had the opportunity to Peer Teach her Grade Nine gym class and I found this equally rewarding. She made physical activity of all sorts fun to me, a person whom at that time never liked to exercise. Now, I have been exercising regularly for 19 months and am so proud. I don’t know that I could have done it without the attitude adjustment I received from her 10 years ago.
